about

The Long Year was one of my favorite and most heartbreaking musical endeavors all wrapped up into one.

A favorite because I got to make music with my maternal cousins, Mike Ferraina and Rich Ferraina, along with a few friends of ours (Dan Kuklinski, Mike Ferrara, Matt Passarella, and Phil Seshens). We would get together in my Uncle Rich and Aunt Linda’s garage and jam on everything from The Early November covers to Mike’s songs from his former band, Drunk By Nine, and new material we’d written in rehearsals.

The project was also the most heartbreaking because of the unfulfilled potential and promise we had, dissolved by a personal tragedy.

After about 6-8 months writing, recording demos in my kitchen, and playing shows here and there, we set out to record at Blackwood Recording Studio with Jamie Myerson, a veteran behind the knobs who worked with legendary artists such as Stevie Wonder and Jewel.

The sessions were going beautifully. Not only were we executing on laying down the music we’d been writing and rehearsing, but we were learning a lifetime’s-worth of knowledge from Jamie in the process.

Sadly, right in the middle of tracking, I began the divorce process and was left to take care of my two very young children unexpectedly.

The guys tried to head back to the studio to finish the album, but The Long Year was no more by the Summer of 2008.

What you’re about to listen to is the progress of a fantastic record in the making. There are quite a few unfinished pieces scattered about, some placeholder-parts that were to be filled in later, mixing and EQ to be done. But the bones of our debut self-titled EP are all here, saved for all time.

I recently reached out to Jamie, hoping beyond hope that the twelve-year-old stem files were saved on a hard drive somewhere. Unfortunately, they were not.

Hence The Long Year proudly presents to you, our self-titled EP as it was left in the Summer of 2008.

Here’s to the hope that one day The Long Year will return to finish what we started.
