"Utter Violence" (Contains Elements of "Living with the Devil" Lyrics by Vincent Marone Out on the lonely highway These ugly streets, they call my name Out on the lonely highway These lonely roads, they lead the way They ask me why I came I'd like to think it's guts and grit that keep me coming back But it's the ghosts of the buried past that keep me hiding far away Why did I stay so long To keep these ghosts Come creeping on, come creeping on To find their resting place out on the highway These haunted streets, they call my name They ask me why I came By 'time my boots done hit the road Yesterday's hopes 'dead 'n gone The rising sun ain't got no choice But to try to bring new hope along 'cause I'm one persistent son of a bitch And my pride gives me the itch To keep moving on Keep moving on "2 MILES TO WESTVILLE" scream the mile marks My scowl burns much brighter in the dark My eyes smolder like ash The ember in the rearview glows bright orange As I burn that circle up Out on the highway These ugly streets, they call my name They ask me why I came These haunted roads, they lead the way They ask me why I came But I keep going on my way Out on the highway Try to keep it low like a thief in the night Sharp words cut the air like the blade of a knife She wants to play, she wants to fight But I snatch up what's mine And I hit the road like a thief in the night The rearview don't lie I've taken what's mine The haunted streets won't stop keeping up on our sides So I let that fire burn with every turn and I burn that circle up Out on the highway These ugly streets, they call my name They ask me why I came These haunted roads, they lead the way They ask me why I came But I keep going on my way Out on the highway

Sail On 02:32

about

After a five-plus year hiatus, First Step to Failure regrouped with its original core members (Jared Sin, Vinny Marone, Chris Crean, Paul Beyers, and Jay O'Shea) to finish their trilogy of EPs.

Many attempts to reunite the members failed over the years (one show even featured Vinny, Chris & Jay perform as "Without Fail" opening for Jared's band The Zombie Mafia). Finally, after begging and pleading, Vinny convinced all parties involved to join together to end First Step to Failure on a positive note.

Sail On features three songs written during the Camp Darkwaters sessions (Ex Mortis, Hole in the Sky, and Remembering December) as well as three brand-new songs that were written or reworked during rehearsals for the Sail On sessions (Utter Violence, Highway 130, Sail On).

The band decided to reconnect with the producer for their first record, Underground Prog Rock legend Bill Berends of Mastermind. The digs at the studio were not as favorable as they were eleven years before, but the goal to make the best record possible to "sail on" from was achieved after just a few weeks in the studio.

It was decided to spend a little more time and care on this batch of songs than had been spent on previous releases. Also, the six songs were narrowed down before the first piece of gear was packed and hauled to the studio. Gone were the days of cramming in as many songs into as little sessions as possible.

Sail On is sonically FSTF's best work by far. Even though the band had split long before, each member kept fairly active as musicians, songwriters, and recording artists. This allowed for a smooth and focused time at Lakeside Studios, as Chris & Vinny largely produced the record themselves while Bill lent his wisdom and knowledge from behind the dials as engineer.

The intent was to record Sail On and go on one final run of shows to celebrate its release and get the live-juices flowing. Sadly, Jared decided to bow out of the run of shows, forcing FSTF to perform as a four-piece with Vinny mostly taking on Lead Signing duties. The void Jared left in both skill, stage presence, and passion would be sorely missed as no singer could ever fill his shoes, not even his long-time band members Vinny, Chris & Paul.

The live performances aside, Sail On will go down in history as a proper bookend to the First Step to Failure Legacy and the final chapter in its existence. The band grew by leaps and bounds - both as musicians and as humans beings - during its tenure. While the ship has officially sailed off into the sunset, there is solace in knowing that that Legacy of First Step to Failure lives on in the band members' other artistic and musical endeavors.
